Music Mondays: “What You Know” by Two Door Cinema Club

This week’s Music Mondays is What You Know by Two Door Cinema Club!

Two Door Cinema Club is an Irish indie rock band that formed in 2007 and has 3 members. All three members met and knew each other since high school. The band did not enter the American music industry until 2010. The band has released 3 albums and 2 EPs, and have gone on multiple worldwide tours. This song was released in January 2011 and they performed it on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon where it became a huge hit – quite arguably their most popular song yet.

This song most definitely has a funk rock feel with few aspects of electronic music. The melodic line being played by the electric guitar is quite catchy and memorable. The electric guitar is quite distinctive in this song in particular because it is playing within its higher range, which is a clever move on the band’s part since it stands out and catches the listener’s ear.

The electric breakdown in the middle of the song is a bit unexpected but definitely keeps the listener’s ear and interest throughout the song since it is almost unexpected. The vocals also are within a higher range of a male’s vocal range which adds to this song standing out to the listener’s ear. The timbre of the vocals is quite clear and it’s obvious that the vocalist has good control over his voice because of the smooth transitions from his higher range to the lower range.

While I don’t particularly understand the message of the music video, it’s a bit quirky which is fun to watch while listening to this fun song. The quirkiness of the music video reflects the quirkiness of the song, which is quite fitting.
