This week’s Music Mondays will feature Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment!
The Social Experiment is an American band that is apparently a self-described group of bohemian musicians consisting of Donnie Trumpet, Chance the Rapper, Peter Cottontale, Greg Landfair Jr. and Nate Fox. The group was formed in 2013 and was recorded in the span of 2 years (since it took a while for all of the artists to get together and collaborate).
This song is from their debut studio album called Surf and was released in May 2015. The album had over 10 million online downloads and was highly anticipated because of Chance the Rapper’s huge involvement in the production of the album.
The music video for this song is quite cute and interesting since it seems to be done all in one take and has more of a Roaring Fifties feel to it. I personally find it very cute and fun to watch. Make sure to watch the video! Also, fun fact: Chance the Rapper directed this music video.
Though the album is classified as Hip Hop/R&B, I would also add Electronic since it does have some electronic qualities to it. There are most definitely some jazzy elements here and there in the song that add a nice touch to it. The trumpets in the song make the song a little less rap-y and more Broadway musical-esque. Because it sounds less like a rap/hip hop song and has a fusion of other musical genres, the song appeals to me on many different levels and senses. In a sense, it feels like the song was composed to appeal to many different audiences.
