This week’s Music Review will feature Lukas Graham and Leah Guest! The song that will be compared/rated is “7 Years”.
Let’s listen to the original!
Lukas Graham is a Danish pop and soul band that debuted in 2012. When they first debuted, most of their music was only available in Europe and select other nations. However, this didn’t stop them from being a hit. Their 1st album hit #1 on the Danish charts and became five-times platinum in Denmark. For their 2nd album, they expanded their horizons and it became a hit internationally, especially in the U.S. This song in particular is from their 2nd album and hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2015.
This song achieved about 225 million listens on Spotify with 17.2 million listeners per month; this made them the 20th most popular artist on Spotify in March 2016. Because of the booming success of this song and the album in general, the band had a two-month long tour throughout the U.S. and Canada which seats all sold out quite quickly. This song also was nominated for 3 Grammy Awards and the Song of the Year at the 2016 BBC Music Awards.
This song is often described as a pop-soul hybrid, with a few newspaper reviewers calling it a mix of pop and R&B or Hip Hop and Folk. Whatever the song seems to be a mix of, it certainly appealed to the masses and was an incredibly successful mix. The melodic line is catchy and memorable, which is most likely the reason it became so popular internationally. The lyrics are inspiring and quite real, as it talks about growing up and aging at specific points in life (from 7 years old to 60 years old). The lyrics are honest and they definitely differ from the usual pop song lyrics.
Rating: 8/10. This is most definitely one of the better pop songs I have heard in a while with honest lyrics about life (rather than just talking about drinking, partying, etc.) and the melody is memorable and easy to listen to.
Let’s now take a listen to the cover!
(Note: The original cover was taken down and this is a repost of the video by another Youtube account and they basically looped the song to be an hour. The original song is only 3 minutes and 50 seconds long. )
Leah Guest is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from England. She became viral on Youtube and many other social media platforms with this cover. She currently has over 90,000 subscribers on Youtube and her channel has hit over 600,000 views.
This cover is a rewrite of the original song with Guest’s own lyrics and they are incredibly powerful. They speak about how a girl is trying to grow up in a scary, cynical world that is out to hurt her and shape who she is. It’s an incredibly moving story so I would definitely recommend that you listen to the cover!
In terms of musicality, Guest’s husky voice changes the song and also changes the lyrics to be even more powerful. The emotion and conviction in Guest’s voice can be clearly heard as she sings her rewritten lyrics. In addition, the subtle changes in instrumental also adds to the power and emotion of the song.
Rating: 9/10. One of the best covers of an original song I have heard thus far. I most definitely applaud Guest for not only making a beautiful cover but also rewriting the lyrics to make it original and personal to her.
